There have been numerous cases in which clients have sued a hair salon for their sufferings. Interestingly, in most of such cases, it is the complacency of the hairstylist that causes problems.

I do not intend to say that all hairstylists get complacent or that every time they are at fault. However, due to the routine job that stylists perform, like hair cutting, coloring, make-up, etc. sometimes they get complacent and forget their basics. That’s what happened in this case.

Recently, a woman went to a salon in Hitchin, UK to put color on her hair. She claims that the hairdresser did not do a patch test to check whether she was allergic to the dye’s materials and applied the color. The woman eventually landed in a hospital after suffering chemical burns to her scalp.

There are many cases like these which suggest that stylists often forget to get their basics right either because they are in a hurry to serve the client or they are completely complacent.

I feel every salon should have a special training session every month so that the new stylists are made aware of their responsibilities. This does happen today, but not very frequently. Mostly, the salon manager inducts the new stylist but forgets to check and train the staff regularly.

Some say that hairstylists are not the only ones to be blamed for accidents, sometimes it is the clients who may initiate it. A client who is allergic to some products or materials, should verify before hand whether the salon uses those products. Also, they should take the initiative to let the stylist know that they are allergic to some specific products.

But I feel that it is the responsibility of every salon to take care of their clients. Not all clients are extroverts and some require counselling and consultations before actually sitting in the chair. So every salon should take the initiative to train their staff to ensure the safety of their client’s health.
