You probably won’t need anything fancy to implement this new look – you can leave the kasho scissors, the exotic blowdryer attachments and other accessories in your work station when working magic on your clients with this new look. The new look in formal is to not look formal at all. You also don’t want to look messy, but trends today are skewing toward a look that is more naural and not overdone.

Take Molly Sims’ gorgeous half up/half down look that she was recently spotted in at the opera. It’s feminine and not the least bit inappropriate for the venue, but it’s still very simple and easy.

The perfect combination for such an event!

You can own all the hair scissors and great products that you want: kasho scissors, name brand shears, funky razors, toshiba scissors – but if you’re aspiring to one day own your own salon all those things aren’t the same as finally being about to build your own business.

For one woman, realizing that dream has been an exciting, scary, and rewarding ride. Tina Stevens opened her own salon in West Virginia after working for several other shops in surrounding areas since graduating from Huntington Beauty College in 1996. After more than ten years working for others, Stevens decided it was time to put her dreams into action.

“I just thought it was time for it and the encouragement I received meant a lot to me,” Stevens said.

Stevens said the opportunity has made her feel independant and has so far been a very positive experience: she’s tripled her business since opening in July. It may have to do with going above and beyond basic hair-cutting services. She will soon be carrying Mirabella and other makeup products. Shear Perfections currently does not offer manicure or pedicure services, but is planning on doing so in the future.

Stevens is averaging 368 customers a month, or 4,416 customers a year. With that kind of average, she should be living her dream for years to come.

Tina Fey isn’t the only NBC star who could play stunt double to Sarah Palin.

Heroes star Christine Rose, who plays Petrelli family matriarch Angela on the hit show, told OK! lots of people have been telling her she could easily be confused with the vice presidential candidate— the only thing missing is the glasses – and she doesn’t deny it! “The first person who said that was me! I said she stole my hairdo!,” smiles Cristine, whose Heroes character wears her hair in a big teased bun with bangs.

While one may have her hair treated with Kasho products and Kasho scissors – or something similar – the other probably frequents local Alaska salons (although perhaps not for much longer!).

Meanwhile, Rose is delving into the sinister on Heroes, which has a three-hour season premiere on Sept. 22. “I’m still looking for a weapon of mass destruction to get my will done,” Cristine says of her character. “She gets a little more manipulative.”

Seems like we’ve been seeing a lot of updated and funky cuts and hair-do changes on A-listers lately. Posh debuted her pixie cut, Kate Moss cut her hair into a choppy bob, and the latest, Agyness Deyn debuted a flapper-inspired crop. While it takes amazing scissors -something like kasho scissors, we’re betting – to get these great looks, are these cuts really all that? Katie Holmes has been seen sporting a similar cut, as her latest iteration of the bob.

The flapper cut originates from the 1920’s and has had a revival in recent years, so much so that it’s being called the defining cut of the decade. It seems a little odd to us that someone would christen it as such, with many other hairdos also making waves.

One thing’s for sure, Katie and Agyness have become style icons thanks in part to their great cuts!

Our team recently took a trip down to LA to film segments for soon-to-launch CuttingEdgeHairshow.com, an e-learning platform for stylists. We scheduled a shoot with Rene Antonio and his awesome and dynamic team of hairstylists. The team demonstrated three cutting edge cuts and colors on three models. The team used a variety of different techniques which demanded the use of several different types and brands of scissors, much like renowned Kasho scissors, which are known for their strong construction and ability to cut straight, clean lines.

Above, Rene talks through some techniques with model Stacey, and Jeff Nance at Salon Gregories washes his model’s hair. Stay tuned for updates on these segments as we edit and post them to the CuttingEdgeHairshow.com.
