Canada’s Beauty Industry to gathe...

It is exactly one month that we have to wait for the winners of Canada’s most prestigious hairstylist awards. The Canadian Hairstylist of the Year Awards — the Contessas — are Canada’s longest-running and most prestigious awards honoring excellence and creativity in salons and among salon professionals across Canada.

Founded in 1988, the Contessas are produced by Salon Communications Inc, the owner of industry publication Salon Magazine. The Contessas invite licensed hair, nail and makeup professionals to compete in 24 categories, 22 of which are photography-based and include the new Master Colorist category.

The best part of these unique hairstyling awards is that the identities of each entrant remain anonymous as the judges evaluate each submission by forming a “blind” panel of independent experts. All submissions are evaluated on originality, creativity, fashion appeal, model suitability and technical execution. Also, the quality of photography, makeup and wardrobe are given importance.

I am sure that the finalists for The Contessas would be eagerly waiting for the annual Contessa gala, when the winners would be announced.

It goes without saying that such awards and recognition play a motivating role for the numerous hairstylists in this industry. To be even nominated for these awards is an honor for all those who have embraced cosmetology education and worked hard to succeed in this field.

Should we worry about the lack of w...

I am thinking of sporting a new hairstyle for this fall. While searching the internet for some cool hairstyles, I noticed that most of times the hairstylists are men. Whether you visit a salon or attend a training seminar in cosmetology education, the chances of seeing women on stage are very less.

It’s a real surprise that the industry which caters to more women has less number of women hairstylists. While thinking about the implications that the lack of women will have on this industry, I landed on a great article that voices the same opinion as mine.
